The 'Rabbit Ear' Binoculars or 'scissors telescope' (Scherenfernrohr) was invented in 1894 by the German optics firm of Carl Zeiss.

It is a special type of binocular telescope in which the two lenses are as far apart as possible due to the scissors or V-shaped construction and a few decimeters above the observer's head. This makes the image appear more vivid, which enables a better differentiation of distance. With the tubes almost parallel, the telescopic sight serves as a periscope. To avoid blurred images, it is usually placed on a tripod.

This cross between binoculars and a periscope enabled the observer to remain safely concealed behind walls, trees or other cover with only the upper lenses visible, an advantage with obvious military applications. It was designed for observation of enemy lines from cover and in safety without having to expose ones head to enemy fire
